As we rapidly approach the opening of this years Bids for Coffee Kids auction to benefit Coffee Kids, more and more generous friends are standing up to support our cause.

Last last night, I got a message from Nick Cho, offering to donate one or more 3-hour coffee brewing/espresso training sessions or coffee cupping/green coffee grading sessions to the auction.  After a few back and forth messages, Nick settle up on the following two donations on behalf of Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters, which have been added to our Month Long items:

Item M-7: 3-hour customized cupping and/or green coffee grading training with Trish Rothgeb

Item M-8: 3-hour customized training on espresso and brewing with Nick Cho

Thank you both for such a generous offer.  It’s wonderful to have you in DC!

Kick It Up for Coffee Kids – Stone Soup Collection

Posted in coffee, coffee roasting, home roasting with tags , , , , , , on May 23, 2009 by Chad

The Fable of the Stone Soup is a Grimm Brothers tale about cooperation amid scarcity. Paraphrased from the Wikipedia Entry:

A few travelers come to a village, carrying nothing more than an empty pot. Upon their arrival, the poor villagers are unwilling to share any of their meager food stores with the hungry travelers. The travelers fill the pot with water, drop a large stone in it, and place it over a fire in the village square. One of the villagers becomes curious and asks what they are doing. The travelers answer that they are making “stone soup”, which tastes wonderful, although it still needs a little bit of garnish to improve the flavor, which they are missing. The villager doesn’t mind parting with just a little bit to help them out, so it gets added to the soup. Another villager walks by, inquiring about the pot, and the travelers again mention their stone soup which hasn’t reached its full potential yet. The villager hands them a little bit of seasoning to help them out. More and more villagers walk by, each adding another ingredient. Finally, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed by all–the first square meal they’ve had in ages.

Over the last few weeks, our villagers in the coffee world have heard the tale of the Kick It Up for Coffee Kids auction over at homeroasters.org.  As many of them have passed our pot, they’ve generously added their items to our “soup”.  The following items are the Stone Soup Collection of the auction:

Kick It Up for Coffee Kids

Posted in coffee, coffee roasting, home roasting with tags , , , , on April 29, 2009 by Chad

A few of us have arranged for a month-long auction over at homeroasters.org to benefit Coffee Kids.

From the homeroasters.org web site:

Throughout the month of May 2009, Homeroasters.org is conducting
auctions on a wide variety of items, many of which the specialty
coffee industry donated with jubilation. Items up for bid range from
assortments of top-quality green coffee, to magazine subscriptions,
grinders, brewers, roasters and much, much more; all proceeds going
directly to Coffee Kids.

Coffee Kids® Grounds for Hope was born out of the specialty coffee
industry by Bill Fishbein in 1988. Coffee Kids® has distributed over
$4 million dollars in funds “to help coffee-farming families improve
the quality of their lives.” With four distinct areas of focus, Latin
American countries have realized improvements in healthcare, education
for children, community-based projects and micro-credit consisting of
$50 – $100 loans that have enabled over 4,000 women to own their own
businesses and support their families.

Let the bidding begin! Click here and Kick it Up for Coffee Kids!

The auction includes donated green coffee from Royal Coffee NY, annual subsriptions and back issues from Roast Magazine, (who also  published my letter to the editor on the auction in their May/June 2009 issue), along with other green coffee lots, home roasters, home-built roasters, sculpture donated by a member, and loads of other items that would make any home roaster or coffee aficionado’s day.  All proceeds to Coffee Kids–some of us members and the donors will be paying all shipping costs within the US.

Our donors have been extremely generous–surprising even those of us who have gotten used to the generosity of the people in specialty coffee.  I continue to be amazed at the warmth and caring of those who chase the bean.  Thank  you all, and please drop by the auction.  Even if none of the lots interest you, drop a few bucks over to Coffee Kids–they deserve it.
